Across the country, jack-o’-lanterns have become one of the most recognizable symbols of Halloween. The U.S. Postal Service celebrated the season with its Jack-O’-Lanterns Forever stamps, featuring photographs of four creatively carved pumpkins glowing against dark backgrounds. Issued in 2016, these were the first Halloween-themed stamps ever released by USPS.

The four designs capture the playful and eerie spirit of Halloween, with each jack-o’-lantern displaying a different carved expression. Jack-o’-lanterns have been associated with Halloween celebrations in the United States since the late 19th century, becoming a familiar sight on porches, in windows, and at autumn celebrations.

Artwork & design: The pumpkins were carved by Paul Montanari and photographed by Sally Andersen-Bruce, with Derry Noyes serving as art director and stamp designer.
